WHEREAS, David L. Bernd, a dedicated health care and community leader, who has worked to enhance the quality of life of his fellow residents of the Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth for many years, retires as chief executive officer of Sentara Healthcare in 2016, after a distinguished 21-year career; and

WHEREAS, David Bernd earned a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary and a master’s degree from the Medical College of Virginia, where he answered his calling to facilitate the well-being of others as a health care administrator; and

WHEREAS, David Bernd began his health care career as an administrative resident at what is now Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in 1972 and rose through the ranks within that organization, becoming chief executive officer of what is now Sentara Healthcare in 1995; and

WHEREAS, David Bernd led the evolution of Sentara as an integrated health system headquartered in Norfolk, comprising 12 acute-care hospitals, with health plans covering 450,000 lives, four medical groups with more than 950 providers, and medical staffs of approximately 3,700 physicians, making it the largest health system in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, under David Bernd’s leadership, Sentara has developed a national reputation for safety, quality, and innovation, including having facilities and programs recognized in the America’s Best Hospitals rankings by U.S. News & World Report for the past 15 years and launching the nation’s first electronic intensive care unit system in 2000 to remotely monitor ICU patients across multiple hospitals; and

WHEREAS, respected among his peers, David Bernd has served as chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Board of Directors and the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, David Bernd has given generously of his time and wise leadership as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army; he is a current member and former rector of Old Dominion University’s Board of Visitors, and he has served as board chair of the United Way of South Hampton Roads, YMCA of South Hampton Roads, and United Way Tocqueville Society, and trustee of the Endowment Association of the College of William and Mary Foundation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend David L. Bernd for his years of service to the residents of Virginia, Sentara Healthcare, and the health care field as a whole; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David L. Bernd as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many contributions to health care, the community, and the Commonwealth and best wishes on a well-earned retirement.
