Commending Pete Talley.

WHEREAS, Pete Talley of Montpelier has served his community with distinction and bravery since he was 12 years old as a member of the Montpelier Volunteer Fire Company; and

WHEREAS, as a young volunteer with the company, Pete Talley lived five miles from the Montpelier fire station; he now lives much closer to the firehouse on Mountain Road and is proud of his lifelong ties to the volunteer department and the close-knit Montpelier community in Hanover County; and

WHEREAS, as a longtime volunteer firefighter with Hanover County, Pete Talley remembers when the members had to raise the funds needed to support the fire station and purchase equipment; when he was younger, firefighters had only basic equipment and often had limited protection when they handled emergencies; and

WHEREAS, Pete Talley is grateful for the opportunity he has been given to protect and serve; in addition to his lengthy service as a member of the Montpelier Volunteer Fire Company, he was a battalion chief for the Henrico County Division of Fire; and

WHEREAS, Pete Talley also ably served the Commonwealth as a hazardous materials specialist, and he was an adjunct instructor for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, where he drew from his experience and expertise to train younger generations of firefighters; and

WHEREAS, reflecting on a life of service to his community, Pete Talley is glad that he was able to help protect the people of Hanover and Henrico Counties in a job that he had wanted to do since he was a boy; and

WHEREAS, Pete Talley acknowledges that a career as a firefighter can be challenging and dangerous; the intense camaraderie makes the work rewarding, and the stories of firefighters working together and supporting each other become lessons that are passed down to younger members; and

WHEREAS, Pete Talley has seen how an accident or fire can change a person’s life in an instant, and he has devoted his life to helping prevent such mishaps and to teaching other firefighters the skills needed to protect the public; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Pete Talley, a longtime member of the Montpelier Volunteer Fire Company, on the occasion of his retirement and for his many years of dedicated service to the people of Hanover County and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Pete Talley as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration and best wishes in the future.
