Commending the Appomattox High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Appomattox High School football team capped off an undefeated season by winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 2A state championship, the first state football title in school history; and

WHEREAS, the Appomattox High School Raiders, who faced a talented team from Clarke County High School, defeated the Eagles 42 - 6 in the title game which was held on December 12, 2015, at Salem Stadium; and

WHEREAS, championship excitement was in the air early in the morning of the big game; as the Appomattox High School team boarded the bus and began the drive to Salem, fans and well-wishers stood in parking lots and along the highway enthusiastically cheering the team to victory; and

WHEREAS, the Appomattox Raiders held the lead throughout the game; the team was strong and fast; during the entire season the squad had come together as a talented, disciplined unit, and the team’s unity and strength were evident; and

WHEREAS, the theme that the Appomattox High School football team adopted for the 2015 season was “Power of One”; Doug Smith, head coach of the Raiders, praised the players’ total team effort and cited the group’s goal to become better each day; and

WHEREAS, the Appomattox High School football team amassed a 15 - 0 record for the 2015 season; the group was strong on offense, defense, and special teams; no opponent scored more than 21 points against the Raiders the entire season; and

WHEREAS, the Appomattox High School Raiders knew that the entire community was behind them, and they appreciated the strong support shown by their families, friends, neighbors, classmates, and the faculty and staff; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Appomattox High School football team for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 2A state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doug Smith, head coach of the Appomattox High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for its outstanding accomplishment and championship season.
