Celebrating the life of Albert J. Taylor, Jr.

WHEREAS, Albert J. Taylor, Jr., a distinguished corporate, estate planning, tax, and transactional attorney in Hampton Roads, died on January 15, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Albert “Al” J. Taylor, Jr., earned a bachelor’s degree from Belmont Abbey College and a law degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at The College of William & Mary; and

WHEREAS, Al Taylor was an attorney for the Office of the Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service and a partner with Cooper, Spong & Davis, P.C.; Hofheimer Nusbaum, P.C.; and Williams Mullen; and

WHEREAS, in his 45 years of practice, Al Taylor was active in the state and local bar associations and was recognized as one of the best business, estate planning, tax, and transactional attorneys in Hampton Roads; and

WHEREAS, Al Taylor was a counselor, friend, and mentor to his clients, partners, and associates; he was consistently listed by his peers in Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Super Lawyers, and Legal Elite in multiple categories; and

WHEREAS, Al Taylor also volunteered his time, wisdom, and leadership skills with many community and business organizations, serving on the boards of the Portsmouth Community Foundation, Portsmouth YMCA, Churchland Rotary Club Foundation, Hampton Roads Youth Center, and a number of other nonprofit organizations; and

WHEREAS, Al Taylor earned many accolades for his good work and was recognized for his leadership and community service when he was named First Citizen of Portsmouth in 2008; and

WHEREAS, of all his accomplishments, Al Taylor was most proud of his role as a husband, father, and grandfather; he was happiest with his wife of 46 years, Fran; his two daughters and their husbands; and his four granddaughters, who knew him as “Pop”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Albert J. Taylor, Jr., an admired attorney and community leader in Portsmouth and Hampton Roads; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Albert J. Taylor, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
