Commending Apostolos Dallas, M.D.

WHEREAS, Apostolos Dallas, M.D., an internal medicine physician in Roanoke, was named the recipient of the Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service by the American College of Physicians; and

WHEREAS, Apostolos Dallas will be recognized for his outstanding contributions to the community in May 2016 at the American College of Physicians’ (ACP) meeting in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dallas works for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke as associate program director of the internal medicine residency, and he is assistant professor and director of Continuing Medical Education at the school; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Dr. Dallas is an assistant professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine; he graduated from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1987 and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians; and

WHEREAS, many organizations have benefited from Dr. Dallas’ volunteer work; in 1992, he started taking internal medicine residents and students to the Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke to treat patients; the volunteer program continues today, and Dr. Dallas, who serves on the clinic’s board, also sees patients there once a month; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dallas helped found a clinic at the Roanoke Rescue Mission to serve the homeless, and in 2015 the mission delivered medical care that was valued at $3.5 million; he also has contributed his time and talents on the national stage as a member of ACP guideline panels; and

WHEREAS, other areas of Roanoke’s vibrant civic life have benefited from Dr. Dallas’ volunteer spirit; he has helped the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church’s Greek Festival raise more than $200,000, and he is proud of his skill at making nearly 200 pans of baklava for the festival each year; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Dallas created the Crockett Cup charity basketball game that raised more than $6,000 for the local Ronald McDonald House; during its six-year run, residents and faculty from the medical school played against each other under the guidance of coaches from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, other organizations and places that Dr. Dallas has helped include the Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, and he has organized medical drives for his birthplace in Greece and a town in Russia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Apostolos Dallas, M.D., for being named the recipient of the Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service by the American College of Physicians; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Apostolos Dallas, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his tireless volunteer work on behalf of the medically needy in the Roanoke area, the Commonwealth, and the world.
