Celebrating the life of Stephanie Rochon.

WHEREAS, Stephanie Rochon, a popular and longtime television news anchor in Richmond, a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness and prevention, and a devoted wife and mother, died on June 3, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Tacoma, Washington, Stephanie Rochon was reared in a military family and lived in many places in the United States and overseas as she grew up; she earned a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and began her career in journalism by working for a radio station; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Rochon then became interested in television broadcast news; she worked as a reporter and anchor for a television station in Austin, Texas, before joining Richmond’s WTVR-TV television station in 1999; and

WHEREAS, with an infectious smile and warm greetings to all with whom she came in contact, Stephanie Rochon was a highly regarded journalist who was known for her pleasant demeanor and friendliness on and off the air; and

WHEREAS, in addition to working as a news anchor for WTVR-TV, Stephanie Rochon was responsible for Buddy Check 6, a monthly award-winning broadcast that provided information about breast health and breast cancer; her mother is a breast cancer survivor, and Stephanie Rochon focused on making people more knowledgeable about breast disease; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Rochon worked hard to reach underserved communities in the Richmond area as she reported for the Buddy Check 6 program; she reached out to black women, especially those who live in low-income areas, to make them aware of breast health and breast cancer prevention; and

WHEREAS, Stephanie Rochon will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her husband, Jeff Moten; children, Miles and Pierce; and many other family members, friends, and viewers of WTVR-TV news; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Stephanie Rochon, a news anchor for WTVR-TV and a determined and effective advocate for breast cancer awareness and prevention; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Stephanie Rochon as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
