Commending Janet J. Zitt.

WHEREAS, Janet J. Zitt, who has served as principal of Salem Elementary School in Virginia Beach since 2008, and has been a highly regarded educator in Virginia Beach for 35 years, will retire in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Janet Zitt graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1980; she earned a master’s degree from The College of William and Mary in 1981, and an education specialist degree from The George Washington University in 1988; and

WHEREAS, in 1981, Janet Zitt became a special education teacher in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools; four years later, she was named an instructional specialist for the public school system; and

WHEREAS, Janet Zitt assumed more administrative responsibility when she was named assistant principal of Thoroughgood Elementary School in 1992; she also served as assistant principal of Ocean Lakes Elementary School from 1998 to 1999 and was honored as State Assistant Principal of the Year in 1998 by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals (VAESP); and

WHEREAS, while working as an assistant principal, Janet Zitt developed and implemented an extended kindergarten program, and she was also honored by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) with a Life Membership Award; and

WHEREAS, from 1999 through 2008, Janet Zitt served as principal of Bayside Elementary School, which received an Elementary PTA National School of Excellence Award in 2003; and

WHEREAS, currently, Janet Zitt serves as principal of Salem Elementary School, a position she has held since 2008; during her tenure, the school received the Pearl School Award, which recognizes efforts to carry out educational and service programs that teach environmental concepts; and

WHEREAS, Janet Zitt was honored as the recipient of the 2008 James D. Mullins Leadership Award from the Virginia Beach Reading Council and she also received the VAESP School Bell Award; and

WHEREAS, as an administrator and leader, Janet Zitt has promoted continuous staff development to improve instructional delivery and curriculum improvements; she also served as a mentor principal for four years; and

WHEREAS, Janet Zitt has made valued contributions as a member of the local and state associations of elementary school principals, Delta Kappa Gamma professional association, and the Virginia Beach Reading Council; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Janet J. Zitt, principal of Salem Elementary School in Virginia Beach since 2008, on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Janet J. Zitt as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for her outstanding service as a teacher and administrator and her dedication to the children of Virginia Beach.
