HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 189
Commending Austin Haycox.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Austin Haycox of Virginia Beach was named a distinguished finalist in the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program for her generous work to support people in need of cleft lip and palate operations; and

WHEREAS, the Spirit of Community Awards, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across the country who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the service of others; as a distinguished finalist, Austin Haycox earned an engraved bronze medallion; and

WHEREAS, Austin Haycox, who is a senior at Norfolk Academy, earned the prestigious national award for her work to raise money for Operation Smile by hosting SUP for Smiles, a stand up paddle board yoga event, in 2015; and

WHEREAS, SUP for Smiles raised more than $42,000 to support 175 cleft lip and palate operations; Austin Haycox is also the president of her school’s Operation Smile Happy Club, which raised an additional $12,000; and

WHEREAS, Austin Haycox has been a loyal supporter of Operation Smile since she was in the first grade, and she previously traveled with the organization to China, where she helped educate families about cleft lip and palate surgeries; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Austin Haycox hereby be commended on being named a distinguished finalist in the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Austin Haycox as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for her volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit and best wishes on future endeavors.
