Commending Brooks Miles Barnes.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Brooks Miles Barnes retired on February 29, 2016, as a librarian at Eastern Shore Public Library in the Town of Accomac, after more than four decades of devoted service to the community; and

WHEREAS, Miles Barnes began his career with Eastern Shore Public Library as an administrative assistant in the mid-1970s; he was promoted to librarian in 1978 after earning his Librarian’s Professional Certificate; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his career, Miles Barnes relished the opportunity to help his fellow Eastern Shore residents and visitors discover historical information about the area or research genealogy; and

WHEREAS, after laying the foundation for a dedicated genealogy section at Eastern Shore Public Library by expanding and reorganizing material, Miles Barnes oversaw the creation of the Eastern Shore genealogy and local history room in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Miles Barnes offered his expertise to countless amateur and professional researchers over the years through his system of “cheat sheets,” handwritten index cards packed with local information, that he later transferred to an electronic file to be uploaded to Eastern Shore Public Library’s website; and

WHEREAS, Miles Barnes contributed to several books about the history of the Eastern Shore and its people, including Seashore Chronicles: Three Centuries of the Virginia Barrier Islands, which he co-edited with a conservation biologist; and

WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Miles Barnes plans to spend more time with his wife, Anne, and their children, Edward and Elizabeth, and he will continue to serve the community as a history consultant for the Eastern Shore Public Library; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Brooks Miles Barnes hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement as a librarian at Eastern Shore Public Library; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Brooks Miles Barnes as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his many contributions to the residents of the Eastern Shore.
