Commending Arthur P. Bushnell.

WHEREAS, Arthur P. Bushnell, the longest-serving school board member of Manassas City Public Schools, was nominated as a Virginia School Boards Association Regional School Board Member of the Year in 2015; and

WHEREAS, each year, the Virginia School Boards Association recognizes outstanding school board members who have contributed to student achievement and promoted lifelong learning; the Manassas City School Board voted to nominate Arthur Bushnell for the 2015 award; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Bushnell was appointed to the Manassas City School Board in 1990, reappointed in 1993, and elected for five subsequent terms; serving as vice chair or chair for a decade, he earned the respect of his peers and the public for his commitment to board accountability and high student achievement; and

WHEREAS, under Arthur Bushnell’s leadership, Manassas City Public Schools implemented full-day kindergarten, constructed Mayfield Intermediate School, renovated three existing schools, began work on Baldwin Elementary School, and opened baseball and softball fields at Osbourn High School; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Bushnell fostered a professional approach to budgeting at Manassas City Public Schools, supported arts and music programs in the school division, and helped establish the Governor’s School at Innovation Park, where he is a joint board member; and

WHEREAS, Arthur Bushnell personally researched and advocated for the Footsteps2Brilliance program, an interactive mobile literacy program that has benefited countless students in Manassas City Public Schools and is the foundation for a blended pre-kindergarten program for all local students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Arthur P. Bushnell hereby be commended on his nomination as a 2015 Virginia School Boards Association Regional School Board Member of the Year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Arthur P. Bushnell as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his tireless service to the youth of the Manassas community and many contributions to the field of education.
