SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 91
Commending the Honorable Ian M. O’Flaherty.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Ian M. O’Flaherty retires as a presiding judge of the Fairfax County General District Court on March 15, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Ian O’Flaherty holds a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary and a law degree from the University of Virginia; he began his legal career in private practice, representing clients on civil, criminal, and traffic matters; and

WHEREAS, Ian O’Flaherty worked in the Fairfax County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney before he was appointed in 1990 as a judge of the Fairfax County General District Court of the 19th Judicial District of Virginia, where he presided with great fairness and wisdom for more than 25 years; and

WHEREAS, Ian O’Flaherty serves the community in many other capacities, including as a member of the Fairfax Bar Association’s General District Court Committee, and he presents free education sessions to attorneys and members of the public; and

WHEREAS, Ian O’Flaherty supports the youth of the community as a judicial liaison for the Court Tours Program for students and as an active participant in mock trials at various schools; and

WHEREAS, an everyday man, Ian O’Flaherty was frequently seen directing traffic and answering questions at the courthouse entrance, shoveling snow from the courthouse sidewalks, raking leaves, and volunteering his time to community litter cleanups; and

WHEREAS, Ian O’Flaherty was known as an independent thinker who presided over the court with great humility, devotion to the rule of law, and fairness to all parties who appeared before him; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Ian O’Flaherty served the residents of Fairfax County and the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism and dedication; after his well-earned retirement, he plans to seek new opportunities to serve the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Ian M. O’Flaherty hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement as a judge of the Fairfax County General District Court; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Ian M. O’Flaherty as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his service to Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.
