Comments
Food deserts in the Commonwealth are a significant source of the growing disparity of wellness and health outcomes. Thank you for drafting this bill and please add my voice to the list of those supporting its passage. I have been researching the growing problems of obesity and diabetes in Virginia and the data is clear that where people lack access to healthful food options, you will see higher prevalence of obesity, diabetes as well as the secondary complications which follow. Additionally, a diet lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables can significantly increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, hypertension, kidney disease and several types of cancers. This is often occurring in populations which are already acutely vulnerable and likely receiving public assistance in their healthcare via DMAS and/or Medicare.
The Virginia Grocery Investment Fund will likely pay for itself within just a few years by avoiding the costs of treating these diseases and complications, which would be more expensive by orders of magnitude. Passing this bill simply makes sense.
