Description

Voter registration; registration permitted up to and including the day of the election. Repeals a provision that would permit any person who is qualified to register to vote to register to vote in person up to and including the day of the election, notwithstanding any deadline for the close of registration records. The repeal will limit the persons who are entitled to register to vote after the close of registration records to (i) any member of a uniformed service of the United States who is on active duty, (ii) any person residing temporarily outside of the United States, and (iii) the spouse or dependent residing with someone listed in (i) or (ii). Lou Di Leonardo writes:

There is no good reason for hordes of people to register on the same day as they vote. Political parties intent on cheating could pay people to register with fictitious addresses, vote, and then disappear all on the same day. Registration should be closed one month prior to election day. Late comers could file late and submit provisional votes to be opened and counted only in case of close races, IF they have been checked and found to be legitimately entitled to vote.

Dee Martworthy writes:

Same day voter registration is absolutely crucial to a full, free and fair election. Automatic voter registration is preferred. There’s no reason under the sun to limit a resident of Virginia from exercising their constitutional right to vote. Well, there’s one. It’s to subvert and suppress the vote. And THAT is unconstitutional. Absolutely do not repeal this law.

Anne M Beamer writes:

Twenty other states have Same Day Registration, so there is no reason why Virginia can't. The newly registered voters would vote a provisional ballot which would be verified by the city/county Board of Elections, so any potential fraud would be caught immediately. Please do not repeal our current law.

Please explain to me why there are five(5) bills introduced with the same language and the same attempt to accomplish the same restriction of eligible Virginians to register and to vote on election day? The existing guidelines work, there's no fraud and as at was demonstrated in the Governor's recent election this platform works. Side note - my mother born in the early 1900's attempted to renew her state picture ID when she was 87 but because she didn't have her original birth certificate she wasn't able to do so. Thank heavens she had bill(s) with her home address and her voter registration card, both without picture ID on them, so she was able to vote in Virginia until she passed away.
